Reminder from the elementary nurse on when to keep your child home from school due to illness:

FEVER : Usually fever is a sign that the body is fighting off an infection or a contagious disease. Fever is most consistently defined as an elevation of 1.5 degrees above the normal which is 98.6. Your child should be fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours before your child is allowed back into school.

DIARRHEA/VOMITING: Diarrhea and vomiting usually occur with an infection or a contagious disease. Sometimes it is not from disease. If your child has diarrhea or vomiting with other illness symptoms, keep your child home. Your child should stay home for 24 hours after last episode.

INFLUENZA: A child that displays fever, persistent coughing, congestion, chills, or muscle aches in any combination should be checked by a doctor and kept home until doctor says they may return.

RASHES: A child with an unidentified rash that is spreading and/or getting worse over time should be kept home and checked by a doctor.

CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINK EYE): Tearing, redness, and puffy eye lids and/or eye discharge should be checked by a doctor before coming to school. Student must remain at home for 24 hours after the medication has started. The child must have at least 2 doses before returning to school.

HEAD LICE : If your child has head lice that are alive, keep your child home to treat him/her and then he/she can return to school after that. Nits (eggs) should be observed and continue treating and combing.


Elementary Yearbooks - Order forms will be sent home with all students except for students who prepaid for a yearbook at registration.  Cost of the yearbook is $10.00.  If you would like to purchase a yearbook please return the order form along with cash or check payable to Humboldt Schools by March 3rd.  Yearbooks will be distributed before the end of the school year.

Preschool Round Up - Will take place on Thursday, March 16th.  This will be a come and go event running from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Mease Elementary.  Children must be 4 years old by September 15, 2017 to enroll in 4 year old preschool at Mease.  HCSD receives a statewide voluntary preschool grant so we are able to offer FREE preschool.  To register for Preschool Round Up please contact Michelle Thomas  If you have questions prior to the event please call 515-332-3578 to talk to Principal Bruder or Mrs. Johnson, our preschool coordinator.

PATHS Bake Sale - Our parent organization will hold a bake sale during Parent Teacher Conferences again in March and are asking for your help.  All proceeds from the bake sale will go toward the funding of elementary field trips.  We need items to sell as well as volunteers to work the bake sale.  We ask that if you are willing to donate your time and/or baked goods that you complete the form and return it to school by February 9th.  If you have any questions please contact Jennifer Lash at  Thank you for your support. 

Kindergarten Round Up will be held at Mease Elementary on Friday, March 17th.  Please contact Michelle Thomas at to register a child for this event.  Children must be five years old by September 15, 2017 to be eligible for kindergarten.  If you have any questions please contact Principal Bruder or Mrs. Thomas at 515-332-3578.

Free Workshop for Parents -The Behavior Doctor is in!!!  All parents are invited to attend a free session with Behavior Doctor, Dr. Laura Riffel on Monday, February 13th from 6-7 p.m. at 800 North 32nd Street in Fort Dodge.  Dr. Riffel will offer tools and strategies to help with behavior at home. She will show parents how to take a targeted behavior and determine what is the trigger of that behavior and what your child is trying to communicate by having that behavior. She will also show you how to develop a plan to magically make the behavior disappear. Free child care will be offered. Registration is needed to assist with planning and coverage for this. More details, including registration, available at The event is jointly sponsored by Fort Dodge Community Schools and Prairie Lakes AEA.

Music Booster Calendar Correction- This calendar shows no school on February 17 and 24. This is in error. There IS school on February 17 and 24. You may view the school calendar online at by clicking on the calendar tab then click on school year on the home page.  

Community Days Coupon Booklets - the After School Program is selling Younkers coupon booklets.  They are available in both elementary school offices.  For a $5.00 donation you will get a booklet full of coupon savings of up to $500.  The coupons will be valid from Thursday, February 23 to Saturday, February 25.   They are valid in store or online. Thank you for supporting our After School Program.

Vision Screening for 3rd Grade  - This is a new requirement for all 3rd Graders in Iowa. If your child has had a screening in the last year ask your provider to complete the screening form and return it to school. If your child has not had a vision screening over the past year he or she will need one by February 2017. The provider will need to complete the form and it will need tobe returned to the school nurse. If you need a form or have any questions please contact Mrs. Hardgrove at
